Transformer Glossary — Technical Terms & Definitions

Alternating Current (AC)

An electric current that periodically reverses direction, as opposed to direct current (DC) which flows in only one direction.

ATEX Certification

European directive for equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres. Required for oil & gas, chemical, and gas processing installations.

BIL (Basic Insulation Level)

The reference impulse insulation withstand voltage that defines the transformer's ability to survive lightning and switching surges.

Buchholz Relay

A gas-actuated protective relay installed in the pipe between the main tank and conservator of oil-filled transformers. Detects gas accumulation from internal faults.

C5-M (Corrosion Protection Class)

Highest corrosion protection class under ISO 12944, required for coastal, offshore, and highly corrosive industrial environments.

Core Loss (No-Load Loss)

Power dissipated in the transformer core due to hysteresis and eddy currents. Present whenever the transformer is energised, regardless of load.

Core Saturation

The condition where the core's magnetic flux density reaches a level where further increases in magnetizing current produce diminishing increases in flux.

CRGO (Cold-Rolled Grain-Oriented Steel)

Specialised silicon steel used for transformer cores. The grain orientation minimises magnetic losses.

Delta-Wye (Δ-Y) Connection

A three-phase transformer connection where the primary winding is connected in delta (triangle) and the secondary in wye (star) configuration.

DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis)

Diagnostic technique that analyses gases dissolved in transformer oil to detect incipient faults.

DOE Efficiency Standards

US Department of Energy mandatory minimum efficiency levels for distribution transformers. DOE 2016 is current; DOE 2024 takes effect in 2027.

Eddy Currents

Circulating currents induced in conductive materials (core laminations, tank walls, structural parts) by time-varying magnetic flux.

Efficiency

The ratio of output power to input power, expressed as a percentage. Modern transformers achieve efficiencies of 98–99.5%.

Ester Insulation Fluid

Biodegradable insulation fluid with superior fire safety properties, available as natural ester (plant-based) or synthetic ester.

Ferroresonance

A nonlinear resonance phenomenon involving the interaction between a transformer's magnetizing inductance and system capacitance, causing dangerous overvoltages.

Ground Fault

An unintended electrical path between an energised conductor and ground (earth), causing current to flow through an unintended path.

Hertz (Hz)

Unit of frequency equal to one cycle per second. Power systems operate at either 50 Hz or 60 Hz.

Primary international standard series for power transformers, covering ratings, temperature rise, insulation levels, tests, and tolerances.

North American standard series for power and distribution transformers. The counterpart to IEC 60076 for ANSI/IEEE markets.

Impedance (%Z)

The percentage of rated voltage required to circulate full-load current through the transformer with the secondary short-circuited. A critical parameter for fault current calculations.

Inductance

The property of a conductor by which a change in current induces an electromotive force (EMF) in the conductor itself or in a nearby conductor.

Inrush Current

The transient surge of magnetizing current that flows when a transformer is first energised. Can reach 8–12 times the rated full-load current.

Insulation Class

Classification of insulation materials based on their maximum continuous operating temperature. Determines the transformer's thermal endurance.

IP Rating (Ingress Protection)

Two-digit code indicating protection against solid objects (first digit, 0–6) and water (second digit, 0–9).

K-Factor

Rating that indicates a transformer's ability to handle harmonic-rich loads from VFDs, UPS systems, LED drivers, and other non-linear loads.

KNAN (Ester Natural Air Natural)

Cooling method using natural or synthetic ester fluid instead of mineral oil, with natural convection cooling. The 'K' designates ester fluid per IEC naming conventions.

kVA (Kilovolt-Ampere)

Unit of apparent power equal to 1,000 volt-amperes. Transformer capacity is rated in kVA rather than kW because the transformer must handle both real and reactive power.

MVA (Megavolt-Ampere)

Unit of apparent power equal to 1,000 kVA or 1,000,000 VA. Used to rate power transformers.

NEMA Enclosure Rating

North American standard for electrical enclosures defining protection against environmental hazards including rain, dust, ice, and corrosive agents.

Nominal Voltage

The designated voltage of a power system or equipment, used as a reference value for the system's operating voltage.

OLTC (On-Load Tap Changer)

Mechanical device that adjusts the transformer's turns ratio while energised and under load, allowing voltage regulation without interrupting supply.

ONAF (Oil Natural Air Forced)

Cooling method where oil circulates by natural convection but fans force air over the radiators, increasing cooling capacity by 25–40%.

ONAN (Oil Natural Air Natural)

Cooling method where oil circulates by natural convection and heat is dissipated to air through radiators without fans or pumps.

Pad-Mounted Transformer

A ground-level, enclosed transformer designed for underground distribution systems. Features a dead-front design for public safety.

Partial Discharge (PD)

Localised electrical discharge that does not fully bridge the insulation between conductors. A precursor to insulation failure.

Power Factor (PF)

The ratio of real power (kW) to apparent power (kVA) in an AC circuit. Ranges from 0 to 1, where 1 represents a purely resistive load.

Primary Winding

The winding connected to the power source (input side) of a transformer. It receives electrical energy and creates a magnetic field in the core.

Reactance

The opposition to alternating current caused by inductance or capacitance in a circuit, measured in ohms.

Secondary Winding

The winding connected to the load (output side) of a transformer. It receives energy from the magnetic field created by the primary winding.

Short Circuit

An abnormal low-resistance path between two conductors or between a conductor and ground, resulting in excessive current flow.

Single-Phase Power

An electrical power system using a single alternating current. Common in residential applications and small commercial installations.

Step-Lap Core Joint

Core lamination stacking technique where adjacent layers are offset in steps rather than aligned, reducing air gaps at joints.

Tan Delta (Dissipation Factor)

Measure of dielectric losses in insulation. A high tan delta value indicates deteriorated insulation.

Taps (Voltage Taps)

Connection points on the transformer winding that allow the turns ratio to be adjusted, changing the output voltage.

Temperature Rise

The increase in winding and oil temperature above ambient when the transformer operates at rated load. A key specification for transformer longevity.

Three-Phase Power

An electrical power system using three alternating currents of equal frequency and amplitude, offset by 120° from each other.

The laminated magnetic circuit that provides the path for magnetic flux between the primary and secondary windings.
