MVA (Megavolt-Ampere) — Transformer Glossary
Unit of apparent power equal to 1,000 kVA or 1,000,000 VA. Used to rate power transformers.
MVA (Megavolt-Ampere)
Unit of apparent power equal to 1,000 kVA or 1,000,000 VA. Used to rate power transformers.
Power transformers are rated in MVA to reflect the scale of electrical power they handle. A 100 MVA transformer can handle 100 million volt-amperes of apparent power. In the ETS product range, distribution transformers are rated up to 5 MVA, while power transformers span 6 MVA to 200 MVA. The MVA rating determines the physical size, weight, cooling requirements, and cost of the transformer. Dual-rated transformers (e.g., 80/100 MVA ONAN/ONAF) can deliver higher capacity when forced cooling is activated.
