    Short Circuit

An abnormal low-resistance path between two conductors or between a conductor and ground, resulting in excessive current flow.

Transformers must withstand the mechanical and thermal forces of short-circuit currents without damage. The magnitude of fault current is inversely proportional to impedance: I_sc = I_rated / (%Z/100). For a 1,000 kVA transformer with 6% impedance, the maximum short-circuit current is approximately 16.7× rated current. Short-circuit withstand capability is verified through type testing per IEC 60076-5, which involves applying full short-circuit current and then verifying no deformation of windings through impedance re-measurement.
