    Single-Phase Power

An electrical power system using a single alternating current. Common in residential applications and small commercial installations.

Single-phase transformers are used primarily in residential distribution (pole-mounted or pad-mounted) and for specialized applications where three-phase supply is unnecessary. Single-phase units can be banked in groups of three to create a three-phase supply — an approach common in North America. This provides redundancy: if one unit fails, the other two can continue operating in open-delta configuration at reduced capacity (57.7%).
