An electrical power system using three alternating currents of equal frequency and amplitude, offset by 120° from each other.
Three-phase power is the standard for industrial and utility applications because it provides: constant power delivery (vs pulsating power in single-phase), more efficient use of conductors, self-starting capability for motors, and natural suitability for rotating machines. Three-phase transformers can be either a single three-limb core construction or a bank of three single-phase units. The single-core design is more compact and cost-effective for most applications.
