    Eddy Currents

Circulating currents induced in conductive materials (core laminations, tank walls, structural parts) by time-varying magnetic flux.

Eddy currents generate I²R losses that produce unwanted heating. In the core, they are minimized by using thin laminations (0.23 mm Hi-B vs 0.35 mm standard) with insulating coatings. In the tank, magnetic shunts redirect stray flux away from steel walls. In windings, transposed conductors (CTC — Continuously Transposed Conductor) reduce eddy current losses in large power transformers. Eddy current losses increase with the square of frequency and conductor thickness.
