Core losses are constant and represent a 24/7 energy cost for the life of the transformer. They are the primary focus of efficiency standards (DOE, EU Eco Design). Core losses consist of: hysteresis losses (~60%, dependent on core material grade) and eddy current losses (~40%, reduced by thinner laminations). Reducing core losses by using Hi-B steel or amorphous metal cores can yield significant lifetime energy savings — a 1,000 kVA transformer operating for 30 years can save €50,000+ in energy costs with a premium core.
