    Reactance

The opposition to alternating current caused by inductance or capacitance in a circuit, measured in ohms.

In transformers, leakage reactance is the dominant component of impedance. It arises from magnetic flux that links one winding but not the other. Higher leakage reactance reduces fault currents (beneficial for protection) but increases voltage regulation (voltage drop under load). Transformer designers balance these competing requirements by adjusting the spacing between primary and secondary windings and the winding geometry.
