North American standard for electrical enclosures defining protection against environmental hazards including rain, dust, ice, and corrosive agents.

NEMA 1 = indoor general purpose. NEMA 3R = outdoor, rain-tight (standard for pad-mounted). NEMA 4 = watertight (industrial). NEMA 4X = watertight + corrosion resistant (stainless steel, coastal). NEMA ratings are not directly equivalent to IP ratings but approximate mappings exist (NEMA 3R ≈ IP14, NEMA 4 ≈ IP66).
