An unintended electrical path between an energized conductor and ground (earth), causing current to flow through an unintended path.
Ground fault protection is critical for transformer safety. Common causes include insulation deterioration, moisture ingress, and physical damage. Buchholz relays detect gas generation from internal faults in oil-filled transformers. Restricted earth fault (REF) protection provides sensitive detection of ground faults within the transformer windings. The neutral earthing method (solid, resistance, or impedance earthing) determines the magnitude of ground fault current and the required protection sensitivity.
