Inductance — Transformer Glossary
The property of a conductor by which a change in current induces an electromotive force (EMF) in the conductor itself or in a nearby conductor.
Inductance
The property of a conductor by which a change in current induces an electromotive force (EMF) in the conductor itself or in a nearby conductor.
Inductance is the fundamental principle behind transformer operation. Self-inductance generates back-EMF in the primary winding, while mutual inductance transfers energy to the secondary winding. The coupling coefficient (ideally 1.0) determines transfer efficiency. Measured in henries (H), the inductance depends on: number of turns², core permeability, core cross-section area, and magnetic path length.
